Description
This listing is for aHickok Model TV-2C/U Mutual Conductance Tube Tester.
This is a laboratory grade mutual conductance tester that tests prewar tubes and most post-war tubes except Compactrons and Nuvistors.
Being a military tester, it is built to much higher standards than TV shop grade testers. The switches are ceramic, the lever switches for the various tests are very long lifetime rated. In my opinion, this has far better build quality that even the famed TV-7.
It uses reasonable AC drive (250 mV for high MU tubes) as compared with many testers that use too high AC drive. It switches to 500 mV for medium MU tubes and 2.5 volts for low MU tubes.
You can set the bias and read the value.
This allows you to do step-grid-voltage gM tests for tubes not in the tube roll chart by getting the tube data sheet, setting the grid bias to proper value and varying the grid voltage while monitoring plate current to produce mA/Volt readings (gM). Multiply the result by 1000 to get uMOHS.
You can read
plate voltage,
screen voltage filament voltage and grid bias, grid AC drive and filament voltage. This is really important
because voltages in tube testers change when you press the "Test" button for high power tubes.
It is in good overall condition. The case is a bit ratty but the tester is good.
There were some extra holes around the multimeter from a previous effort to convert to a digital panel meter. That proved difficult due to the multifunction nature of the meter. The holes are filled and touched up but are visible.
It is tested, shown in the photo testing a known good 6L6 tube, reading about 85%, a result that compares with the results from my own Triplett 3444 tester.
I replaced the really bad power cord but I used the original military style plug.
I replaced the Plate Voltage/multimeter. In so doing, I needed to change the multiplier resistors to get the calibration correct.
I replaced all electrolytic capacitors in the tester.
I replaced the 6X4 rectifiers with correct plug-in solid state replacements.
I kept the 83 rectifier be cause calibration went better than
with solid state replacement.
I changed the gM bridge zero potentiometer with a 10 turn potentiometer to make exact setting much
easier.
I cleaned sockets and switchers.
I replaced the "A" and "B" clip lead wires all the way back to their sources as the old ones were severely cracked.
I removed the useless 8 pin sub-mini wire-lead tube socket and replaced is with an 8 pin output socket that allows you to measure plate current, plate voltage, screen voltage, grid voltage and filament voltage with an external digital multimeter. This makes tube matching really easy.
I will provide a male plug and instructions as to using this feature with your meter.
This model tester can oscillate at high frequencies when testing some high MU tubes like 6EJ7's. I corrected the problem by placing a very small value bypass capacitor on the grid to ground. This does not affect readings, it only suppresses oscillations. I suspect other testers have the issue, most folks just do not notice it.
I performed the calibration procedure according to the service manual.
This comes with its original documentation including
tube data and the service manual. The service manual is rough but all there. I used it a lot in the process of this restoration.
This is 100% guaranteed to be as described.
I am happy to answer your questions to the best of my ability.
