Description
This is the March 31st, 1970 "Tricentennial Edition" of theNews and Courier
, the Charleston, South Carolina morning newspaper at the time (now the
Post and Courier
). It celebrates the 300th year since the founding of Charleston, SC in 1670.
This is a very rare one-of-a-kind item, in as good a condition as could be expected.
The year 2020 is the 350th anniversary of the founding of Charleston!
It has 126 pages, has been stored in the dark for fifty years, and
has never been read
.
The pages have yellowed somewhat, but they are still flexible.
The front page has details about the new
Tricentennial Pavilion
at Charles Towne Landing. This pavilion was a very big and costly deal at the time. I don't know if this pavilion is still there (see picture). At the time, they were having serious problems with the roof of the new structure. It sounded like a lawsuit was brewing, but most probably the taxpayers just got screwed.
There is a full-color rendering of historical facts and Charleston trivia/activities under the headline. Color printing of newspapers was a rare thing at the time.
There are also front-page stories about the Vietnam War, Cambodia, an air controller strike, earthquakes in Turkey, and an estimate that hospitals may cost "0 a day" by 1975. No mention of the 49 per day they cost in 2021 :).
Inside there are stories by Ashley Cooper, and individual sections on the 300th anniversary, business/industry, government/military, recreation/tourism, and education/medical arts. Lots of ads from the furniture stores on King Street, and from the well-known and loved major department stores like Belk, Lowe's and the Sam Solomon Company, plus ads from hundreds of smaller vendors, movie schedules, etc
I have described it as accurately as I can.
