Tube Checker Tester Model 55 w/Original Instructions & Tube Charts - Working Condition
A Rare Antique 1933 Supreme Tube Checker/Tester Model 55, Serial #XY-211, by
Supreme Instruments Corp.
of Greenwood, Mississippi. This is the unit I used as a novice some 40+ years ago when my Dad gave it to me. At the time, I used it for checking a ton of early 4 & 5 pin globe tubes that he inventoried. And, as you can see, the unit is aesthetically very well preserved, and in fact, in Very Good Working Condition, as I’ve kept it stored in a nice workshop cabinet since I’ve owned it.
Supreme Instruments Corp. began manufacturing operations from a garage in 1926, and manufactured tube testers for radio servicemen and repair shops. These testers were not mass produced & there were apparently very few of this specific model, as there is a total lack of info available on the internet for this unit. And that’s no surprise, as each tester was completely assembled and mounted in a wood case by a
single
technician. In fact, I have the technician’s initials on the Original Packing List which is included with this auction, along with the Original Operating Instructions & extensive Supreme Master Diagnometer & Model 55 Tube Testing Table listing 127 pre-1936 Tube Types & their settings for testing.
The oak, dove-tailed cabinet housing measures approximately 11” W X 9.5” D X 5” H and weighs nearly 10 lbs. The leather handle strap is in VG+ Condition. The unit has four (4) tube sockets for early 4-pin, 5-pin, 6-pin, and 7-pin tubes, plus pin jacks for the shielded tube cap cable (included). Tube Data Sheets for 127 pre-1936 vacuum tubes are in a 3-ring binder with protective sheet covers. Some of the popular tubes covered include 01A, 10, 12A, 20, 24A, 26, 27, 35, 42, 45, 47, 50, 71A, and 80; plus many hard-to-find tubes, such as, Majestic G-2S & G-4S, KR-20 & KR-22, 64A, 65A, 67A, 68A, 87S, 88S, 482A, 482B, 484, 485, 585, AD, AF, GA, LA, PZ, PZH, WUND-A, and many, many more. The Operating Instructions give detailed set-up and test procedures.
Also included are a bunch of
gum-backed tube stickers
that were used by early radio technicians to indicate the condition of a vacuum tube after it was checked – most of these are all stuck together after being stored in this box for 80+ years, but they’re staying with the unit. Additionally, a
1935 Sylvania
Radio Tube Characteristics brochure
and a
1934 National Union
Radio Tube Characteristics brochure
are included – both have a lot of creases and are tattered and torn, but nevertheless, were with the unit when it was handed down to me, so it’s only right that they too go along to the new owner!
So now it’s being offered for auction here at a very reasonable ‘Opening’ bid! Please contact me if any questions! B
est of luck to all….. more vintage stuff coming soon!!
